# Clinical Hypnosis

Published 2026-07-17

## What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is often described as a state of increased awareness and focused attention. The narrowed focus can reduce distractions and support greater emotional access and responsiveness.

Trance is a naturally occurring state of consciousness, similar to becoming absorbed in a daydream, book, or familiar drive. In clinical hypnosis, that capacity for focus is used intentionally within a therapeutic setting.

Hypnosis is not mind control.

A therapist cannot force a client to do something against their values or wishes. The client remains an active participant in the process.

Clinical hypnosis may help a person relax conscious effort while working with thoughts, sensations, memories, habits, or goals. It is used as part of a broader treatment plan, not as a performance or loss of control.
